El Presidente

Must have been 2003...

Hindustan Times was running a Cartoon Contest for Amateur cartoonists.

One of the sections of the contest, required us to submit caricatures of famous personalities.

This homely scientist sporting shocking white locks, had just become the President of India.

He was a refreshing change from the crop of sorry politicians who graced or disgraced the office, before and after him.

I submitted this caricature, and it was exhibited at Sridharini Art Gallery on Tansen Marg.

Though I would like to think that my penmanship put the sketch there, I know in my heart of hearts, that the force of this gentle scientist's personality had gained me access to the wall of fame.

He did not become famous because he became President.

it will be safe to say that the office of the President of India became famous due to him.

  2. In our times he was the only President that graced the corridors of Rastrapathi Bhavan which had the ignominy of housing stooges whose lone qualification was to be ridiculously subservient to the powers that be.
It is a matter of pride for many of us to have him as our President. Even more is his stint at ISRO & DRDO as a scientist par excellence that he will be remembered with great regard.
Hope the liftoff to the ether world will dock him in that celestial belt inspiring many more star performers and star gazers to tread the path he showed.

May his soul rest in peace.
