If there is one classical song which connected Gen X to Gen Y to Gen C, it is the one that DD National channel never gets tired of playing.
and, it is the one which the hep-per ( is there such a word?) channels will not touch with a barge pole.
"Mile sur mera tumhara" in 1988 became the anthem of a country which was not only struggling with divisive forces, but also abject poverty.
One of the first upbeat numbers, it was the harbinger of the good tidings which were to follow in about a decade and a half...
and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi in his spotless whites won me over.
I had never known that classical music could be so enticing.
so, this is a thank you note to the man who made Calcutta weep.
Jai Ho.
(also, thank you, Ashok Patki, Louis Banks and Prasun Joshi)
