Walking barefoot on the stone slabs of the temple premises, in mid-April, is a test of faith.
Desperately staggering from shade to shade, i could safely surmise that even if my soul did not get cleansed by the experience, my soles certainly be well cooked by the time I returned to the shoe-stand.
Wiser disciples are content with the daily darshan on the air-conditioned car's dashboard.
No wonder these lions at Pipli ( of the applique work fame) were laughing at us on our way out.
I guess other faiths are spared the effort....

Having just returned from a quickie trip to Srirangam, I can concur with you on the cooked soles. Walking at 3PM in the afternoon barefoot on stones within the temple was better than on the the tarred road to the temple - and there was no shade either :(. But the crowds contentedly standing in the queues make one wonderous at the pull of faith.
