Ladakh- the land of high passes- must have been one of the favorite routes that Ashoka's emissaries took when they went around spreading the word of the Buddha.
Almost every village boasts of its own monastery. Each more beautiful than the other...
This is Phyang. One of the most beautiful ones we explored late one evening.
Then, there was Alchi- the 1000 year old monastery- having lovely paintings drawn by Hindu and Buddhist artists. a delightful mixture of cultures. awestuck.
Not to forget, outside of Italy- the best seafood pasta is served here- in the cafe near the monastery
and, virtually every hilltop of every village beckoned us...
wish there was time enough to sit there and sketch till ones heart's content.
