Mishing Kaziranga!

Khasi is Karbi for goat.
Ranga is colour- actually, red.
The land of red goats is Kaziranga.
Maybe, the Karbi people were enchanted with the Hog Deers, which they called "red goats".
The rhinos certainly would not answer to that moniker.
if they did, you better get out of the way!

The other tribe inhabiting this land, is the Mishing tribe. They build houses on bamboo stilts. Their worldly possessions of buffaloes, goats, pigs, hen and weaving machine remain on the ground floor, or rather the ground itself.

They weave beautiful Mekala and shawls painstakingly on their manual weaving machines and Charkas.

It is a tough life for the Mishing people. They inhabit the grasslands of the Brahmaputra plains.
The monsoons bring floods. The water rises to enter their homes. Hopefully, it will remain below the stilts.

if it does'nt, they will have to migrate along with the Rhinos, Wild Buffaloes, tigers and deers, to the hills nearby.

A pretty Mishing girl holds her baby brother, who decided to start bawling at the sight of my Camera.

A Mishing house, set amidst Mustard fields.

I still can recall the sight and sounds of the village, as I quickly sketched a tribute to them.
